Something to watch: Gobby (like SubEthaEdit, except cross-platform) #
August has been an interesting month traffic-wise. First I got delisted by Google, and then when I finally figured out why—and who was responsible—I got seriously Dugg. Here’s a graph: Thankfully, I got relisted on Google, and things seem to…
Stephanie and I have this idea for a cookbook project we’d like to work on together, and it occurred to me that a wiki would be a great candidate. Actually it may have been Stephanie who first suggested using something…
Just installed the latest version of BitPim (which recently went one dot oh) and was finally able to download the photos that have been trapped on my cell phone since moving off Windows completely. Yay!
I like this photo. I think it shows us for real. The scene was incredibly backlit, but if there’s anything I’ve learned about taking pictures, it’s to refrain from using the flash. Of course immediately after this, I took one…
This is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. I’m not sure why, as I’ve never been a big fan of podcasting, but I really like the idea of short, supplementary blog-embedded audio/video. Recently I heard my voice…
I think I may have found a solution to my pressing aesthetic dilemma: where to put a residential parking permit sticker on a Vespa? It’s called an inspection plate—useful in states (unlike California) that require an annual inspection sticker displayed…
This is the view from our bathroom window. It’s really narrow. I’ve actually never been down there.

A few glimpses from our camping trip this weekend, this time at Wright’s Beach, part of Sonoma Coast State Park. The campsite view was awesome. The weather not so much. Thankfully it wasn’t windy. Perfect weather for sitting around a…
It’s been such a crazy week, I totally forgot to mention that Loose Change (the dance company Stephanie’s in) will be having a fundraiser this Saturday (Sept 15) at City Dance in San Francisco. They’ll be performing a few “modern…
The first time I heard the song “The Lemon of Pink” from The Book’s same-titled album, I practically stopped in my tracks (where my tracks are me sitting at my computer at work listening to SomaFM’s Indie Pop Rocks). I’m…
Shot in motion this afternoon along the Embarcadero—part of a Jose Cuervo advertising blitz run by Scooter Media. I’ll pass on the tequila, but where can I get one of those trailers? This would make “vespa camping” a total reality.
I mean really, what else would you do if you found Wisconsin Cheddar Cheese Curds at Trader Joes on a Sunday night? I rate the curds pretty low on the squeakiness scale, even after 10-20 seconds in the microwave. I…
Update: it was announced on May 13, 2008 that a vulnerability was discovered in a Debian patch to a library used to generate SSH (and SSL) keys. If you followed these instructions before May 15, 2008 to generate a passphraseless…
The light was strange on Friday evening I was wrapping up at work. We usually don’t get that many sunsets (because of the evening fog) but that night the setting sun was casting a yellowish glow over Sausalito. As I…
Updated for GIMP 2.4! …or how to “Justinify” your photos …or how I learned Lisp on a Saturday night Yesterday I was working on a project where I needed to resize and “retouch” over a hundred photos for the web.…
$ svn sw http://svn.automattic.com/wordpress/tags/2.3 U wp-pass.php U wp-rss.php U wp-login.php … Updated to revision 6166. More information on the release can be found here: WordPress 2.3. Now you can tag your posts like it’s 2003! Man, subversion is just the…
The GNU Core Utilities are the basic file, shell and text manipulation utilities of the GNU operating system. These are the core utilities which are expected to exist on every operating system. This post is an elaboration on a feature…
Something to try at your next BBQ* Mmm… doesn’t that look good? *And one more reason you should think about working at Federated Media
Inspired by Steve of Scooter in the Sticks, I’ve decided to post more photos in which our scooters play a prominent role.
Stephanie and I came out of the apartment one Monday morning and discovered that our scooters had made friends with the other motorcycles on the block. They grow up so fast.
Which makes me think of that song by Band of Horses. I’m not even sure if we’re going to end up seeing the Great Salt Lake. It was raining and SNOWING when I landed, so I didn’t really see much…

Rolling Stone does it again: The Great Iraq Swindle
That was how America fought terrorism in Iraq: It hired civilian air-conditioning techs to fix Humvees using the instruction manual while the real Humvee repairmen, earning a third of what the helpless civilians were paid, drove around in circles outside the wire waiting to get blown up by insurgents.

It’s random image mania over here at Justinsomnia tonight!
I just added a section to my Random Image Plugin post on “how to include random images across blogs.” Amazingly enough, I had to draw on the work I do at my day job (re: adserving) to implement this.
The neat thing about this solution is that you can include a random image from a WordPress blog onto any webpage (provided the web browser viewing the page has JavaScript enabled), not just another WordPress blog. #

I wonder sometimes if the feeling I get watching Thomas Fischbach’s Dice Stacking Movie Vol. 3 is the same feeling my parents had watching TV for the first time. That I’ll never quite be the same after having experienced this, and that I can’t imagine having experienced it any other way. #
