Stuff I’ve done with my friends

asheville to clarksville

made it to melanie’s house around 7:20pm tonight, cst. took about 5 hours from asheville, and i crossed a time zone, which was kind of weird to do in a car. total miles traveled today: in the neighborhood of 560. miles to go: a little over 3000. i’m 15% of the way there!

met their puppy gus who is a master fetcher, then did a quick driving tour through downtown clarksville. said hi to pj who was out playing softball. came back to partake of some lovely bbq left over from a recent party. played more fetch with gus.

He’s Not Here Happy Hour

usually happy hour is at “the library” but when school ends, they don’t open till later, so we started heading to “he’s not” to enjoy the weather. haven’t done much picture taking this semester, (who knows maybe this was the last official happy hour of the semester) so anyway, decided to get some pictures of friends and revelers

how easy to forget that school is awesome because of the new people. what was i doing dissin’ 19 years of school in my last post? i feel like i’ve dissed all the new people i’ve met over those 19 years. apologies new people.

last night we gleefully happy-houred at hell, thanks to the quick thinking of trish who came first upon the closed library.

hell, which most agreed should be conferred “most favored bar status” (beating out henry’s and he’s not for the prize) demonstrated to the ample handful of new silsers that all the ribbing they’ve endured from friends and family on account of going to library school ends now.

if only because of happy hour, the school of information and library science will ROCK your face off.

turn around

how could anyone ever get up in front of a microphone on karaoke night at bubs after owen and rebecca’s stirring rendition of “total eclipse of the heart”?

Turn around…

clearly my efforts at complete vocal supremacy (singing wide open spaces with trish) was muted somewhat by the fact they essentially turned off my microphone.

Turn around…

but i tried to redeem that flaccid initial performance with a more timely and thought-provoking duet of audioslave’s “like a stone” alongside patrick chen.

Turn around…

and then that’s where my memory gets quite fuzzy. which is quite alright as there are already about half a dozen friends who’ve blogged about the night to provide you, dear reader, with a myriad perspectives on the night that owen c franklin turned twenty eight.

Turn around, bright eyes
Every now and then I fall apart…

update: karaoke madness in pictures. all your favorite moments, especially that one were i spill beer on myself.

Once upon a time there was light in my life
But now there’s only love in the dark
Nothing I can say
A total eclipse of the heart!

car diary: a laundromat story

so far…

i’ve been to the mall, bought a few tshirts, ate at the food court with jackie.

i’ve driven to katie’s house in glen lennox to watch movies and eat pizza with her and melanie.

i’ve driven to marianne’s house in carrboro to watch 3/4 of monsoon wedding with her and some of her housemates. unbeknownst to me, one of the eight housemates was flying back to germany the following day and decided to sell the tv (it was originally acquired for free). so part way through the movie, the tv got turned off and the people who bought it carted it away. and we sat on the couch looking at the spot where the tv used to be. (and talked and laughed of course)

i’ve driven to katie’s house with jackie to eat brunch. bought eggs and bacon just in case, turned out to be a wonderful complement to her british style pancakes (think crepes meets tortilla). we watched the last chunk of father of the bride, ate, and drank mimosas.

i’ve driven to the laundromat on airport road, to do my laundry, four loads in parallel! of course it costs $2 a load, but i started around 3:30pm and should be done by 5pm.

the laundromat is uncomfortable at first. i have to read all the instructions on every machine and figure out how many quarters it takes and where to put the detergent and where to put the fabric softener. people are all around me doing their thing. folding. loading. hanging. piling. reading. and i wish i had my own washer and dryer all alone in my house, without that feeling that everyone is looking at me.

and then i realize this is just like being out at the coffee shop. people are nice. everyone is in the same situation. the potential for meeting people is a lot greater than it would be stuck in a house all alone for hours. so i am out. and that feels good.
