Bummer, the checking account I opened with Schwab in August started with an APY of 4.25%—now it’s down to 3.21% (which is still a great rate for a checking account). And ATM fees are still free.

I realize this post is from 2008… how interest rates have fallen! My credit union’s interest rate (0.2%) compares favorably with Schwab’s, which is currently at 0.15%:
see Schwab’s checking account page.

Unfortunately, my credit union requires that you maintain direct deposit to use their interest-paying checking account – otherwise, no interest for you! And I recently quit my job, so I had to switch to their no-interest checking. Schwab may be the way to go for me. Although I’m not sure whether it’s worth it, for 0.15%; I do not keep a ton of money in my checking account.
