If you were in the market for a netbook…

Would you get a Dell Mini 10?

Dell Mini 10 Netbook

Pros:

  • Ubuntu 8.04 pre-load!!!
  • High-res screen (1366x768px) option: +$50
  • 64GB Solid State Drive option: only +$125
  • Higher capacity 3-cell battery

Or a Lenovo IdeaPad S10-2?

Lenovo S10-2 Netbook

Pros:

  • Better keyboard

I think I just answered my own question. That said, if Lenovo came out with a higher resolution screen and a higher capacity 3-cell battery (right now they only ship with a clunky, heavy, 6-cell), my allegiances might just shift. However, one shouldn’t underestimate the value of a good keyboard—besides the screen, it’s the primary way one interacts with the computer.

And as much as I hate paying the “Windows tax” I also have no problem wiping it and installing Ubuntu myself. Still it’s nice to know that Dell supports Ubuntu on the Mini 10, which ostensibly means they’ve taken pains to ensure that all the hardware works out of the box.

I got an Asus Eee PC 900HA. LOVE it. To pieces. Srsly.

My only problem with the Asus Eee PC is that there’s like umptybillion models with numbers that don’t seem to have rhyme or reason, and the only place I can buy them is through Amazon. I dunno, when I buy computers, I really like to be able to customize them, slower processor, more memory, SSD, whatever. Anyway, thanks for your vote.
