Dresser shopping

Woke earlier than I would have liked. HAD NOTHING PLANNED! Introduced Stephanie to the Big Picture. An hour disappeared. I made fancy grilled cheese sandwiches for breakfast: multi-grain bread, 2 cheeses, ham, and flaked salt. Took a nap. Showered. Decided to go to IKEA just for fun. Surprisingly few Zipcars were available at a moment’s notice, so we had to walk down Pine a bit. Stephanie ended up buying two pieces of furniture, a red-stained dresser and storage bench. These photos don’t do them justice:

Normally I’m not a big fan of getting a lot of IKEA furniture, but it turns out finding a cool dresser is next to impossible—and we’ve been looking. I did find one at Room and Board, but Stephanie didn’t like the available finishes. Maybe one day I’ll get a dresser.

An interesting factoid: what I grew up calling a dresser, essentially a bedroom piece of furniture consisting of 3-5 stacked drawers for storing folded clothes, is not entirely correct. Originally a dresser was piece of furniture for the kitchen or dining room for “storing and displaying crockery.” Or so says Wikipedia. Apparently what I call a dresser is also known as a chest of drawers.

We celebrated our flat-pack finds with east bay friend Jonathan over a few pints and a heaping plate of Cato’s Ale House nachos. I was thinking we’d begin assembly tonight, but Stephanie’s already conked out in bed next to me. It’s going to be like Christmas morning when I wake up tomorrow.
