Carbon-neutral computer power?

The very last step in the long (but streamlined) Dell computer configuration process involves selecting “My Environmental Options.”

Traditionally this involves a significant additional fee in order to “recycle” aging hardware (which regrettably means it probably gets dumped in China, India or some developing country). Dell however, appears to be taking a different approach. For only $2:

…you can plant a tree to help offset the carbon dioxide emissions generated to power your new system.

Dell Environmental Options

Wow. That gives me the warm fuzzies all over. Apparently this is a new program, because I see they’re promoting it on the homepage: Plant a Tree for Me. Kudos to Dell.

Nice! Shame you can’t select to plant multiple trees though.

I hope they do some follow up work on this to support the process itself. Some media, photos perhaps showing where/how the money is being used.

The more trees the merrier!

Very cool. But a bit annoying that they only offer this from their US Store… and not in other areas they do business in (well at least not NZ).
