Vacuum lust

Running a few errands at Target last night, I discovered the Electrolux Pronto and the Dirt Devil Kone (not shown to scale).

Electrolux Pronto and Dirt Devil Kone

The Kone, a hand-held vacuum designed by Karim Rashid, is so pretty that its packaging pictures it displayed on top of a cabinet like a piece of art. It’s available in 6 colors, including one with a translucent base that glows, for only $39.99. Color me impressed.

Whereas the Kone is a pretty typical graduate from the Target school of domestic design, the Pronto looks like an instant classic. A rechargeable upright. A 180° swiveling head (like the Dyson Ball without the ball). Converts into a hand held vacuum. All for $99.

The only thing that stopped me from picking one up on the spot? It’s power (or the lack thereof). I don’t think we need the full power of a traditional upright to keep our hardwood floors dust free, but I’d like to know that this thing can suck (i.e. has good suction). Unfortunately the packaging was noticeably mute on the subject, leading me to wonder if they’re selling form over function.

Hmmm, how about changing “that this thing can suck” to “that this thing has good suction” since the slang “sucK’ can imply you want something that does not work properly.

Kyle wants a Roomba. Like a lot.
