Migrating to Gallery 2
A few weeks ago I finally got around to doing a test install of Gallery 2, the latest and much improved version of the open source software that runs my photo gallery.
I have to say the installation and migration process was so smooth and so polished, I decided to do it all over again, this time taking screenshots along the way.
Next step: integrating the Gallery theme with my WordPress theme.
Welcome

Authenticate by uploading a time-sensitive hash key to my webspace

Reassuring feedback along the way

Check the hosting environment, all systems go

Choose installation type: single gallery or multiple subdomain galleries

Photos are now stored out of reach of the webserver

Metadata is now stored in a database!

Setup admin user

Create config file

Install core Gallery files

Install modules (I opted for the full install with over 50 modules)

Check security, kudos to the gallery team for this last step

Hardly a step at all, we’re done!

I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a snazzy HTML login form

After logging in, I continued with the migration instructions (though I really didn’t need to) which basically consisted of clicking the import from Gallery 1 link, selecting the users and albums I wanted to import, and clicking Import. It happened so fast I didn’t even get a chance to take a screenshot.

You should try UPG!
Here’s a demo, enjoy ;)
