These posts are related to my time at the University of North Carolina at Chapel (UNC), specifically the School of Library and Information and Science (SILS), where I graduated with a Master’s of Science in Information Science in 2004. I also received my Bachelor’s degree in linguistics at UNC in 2002.
i have a completely stupid intractable decision to make.
do i remain in adv www programming or do i drop it?
basically it has come down to a question of ranking the benefit of getting 3 more credit hours this semester (instead of another) or the benefit of not having to bother with servlet programming.
all i wanted to do today was sit down and work on a java servlet assignment. however due to various impediments (no laptop, can’t install java sdk on work computer, can’t access workspace via AFS, can’t access workspace via ftp, can’t efficiently edit files using vi or emacs) i am unable to do so.
i mean i totally programmed myself to be working on this today and *nothing* else. and now i’m like: now what?
this is the second time i’ve tried to take this freaking class and i’m thinking about dropping it more and more.
as i type, my dad is in LA undergoing surgery to have a tumor called an ‘acoustic neuroma’ removed from his brain. [Update: surgery is finished, dad is alive, tumor is gone.]
i haven’t written much lately because i’ve been fairly busy with classes (which have started again) and work and friends. this semester is a smattering of different and hopefully interesting courses: intro to cognitive science, advanced world wide web programming (my second attempt), user-interfaces, and internet issues & future initiatives where eric s raymond of ‘open source’ fame will be coming to talk.
On the evening of December 4th, North Carolina was hit with an ice storm that knocked out power for more than a million customers, some of whom didn’t get their power, heat, hot water restored for over a week.

justin, who likes living in time but not being obsessed or enslaved by it (no watch, no pda, no planner, no calendars), just created his anxiety-producing end of the semester calendar for maximum visual effect. what does this particular end of the semester hold?
well, a less stressful trip to austin now that i no longer have to contend both with finals and getting kicked out of the dorms. i’ll be in austin from december 19 through january 1.
my 23rd birthday on december 5th.
only 3 (!) classes with 1 final exam and 1.5 final projects
i’m not going home to austin for thanksgiving this year. which is a bummer cause thanksgiving is a killer holiday for cooking. maybe i’ll be making gravy for melanie and family.
