holy crap, i’m totally distracted
by the fact that my wireless access point (Linksys BEFW11S4v2) keeps dropping it’s signal, requiring me to *frequently* get up and unplug it and replug it. i’ve called tech support, i’ve reflashed the firmware (same version), i’ve changed the channel from 6 to 11 to 9. and it keeps happening. started about two weeks ago. i’m wondering if the folks next door have a new portable phone or something. it’s not like i /need/ it for what i’m doing right now (my freaking master’s paper!!!), but it sure is distracting for half a webpage to load and then suddenly, 0% signal, meanwhile the little devil is sitting 10 feet away from me blinking cheerfully.
and it only happens in the middle of downloading a webpage never during the hours between when i’m pulling my hair out trying to explain my project’s “background.” i’m going to weaver street. maybe i’ll be less distracted there.
I read somewhere (can’t find the link now) that this can happen when your AP isn’t broadcasting its SSID and Windows detects another AP that does broadcast an SSID. Windows tries to connect to the other AP, dropping your connection in the process.
i want to KILL my access point. i want to throw it against a wall.
(it says it’s broadcasting my SSID)
Betsy’s thinkpad was doing something similar for awhile…but it wasn’t our access point. It took reinstalling the wireless card drivers in her machine to fix it. Head to the IBM support pages, and track down the driver for your internal card. That seemed to fix hers.
i dunno, i just uninstalled and reinstalled my network card driver/utility and nothing changed, still couldn’t get a signal (even after multiple system reboots) until i unplugged my wireless access point from the wall and replugged it in.
i have to believe that partially isolates the problem.
may just be time to get a new AP. linksys now has a cable modem/router/4 port switch/wireless access point/firewall combo now.
just stop your wireless zero configuration service… that’ll totally work
dude, i have no such service, i don’t see anything that looks like that. maybe we’ve got different router/access points.
On your laptop?
sounds like the same ghost that makes my phone die
this ghost is EVIL!
