I am not a programmer though I write code. I do not play with programming languages in my spare time. I do not learn new languages for fun. But still I find it so interesting reading about people who do: Lisp is sin and The Perils of JavaSchools

i personally find your distinction between people who program and programmers odious. :)
I could see this expanding into a very long discussion. Basically I have a concept of what a programmer is, and it does not mesh with what I do or what I want to do (especially after reading some of the articles I linked to).
But that doesn’t mean I don’t occasionally write and read php, perl, html, css, javascript, rss, atom, etc.
My feeling is not too dissimilar from Sam Ruby’s description of telephone operators in his post, Homesteaders of the 21st century.
In the future everyone will do a little programming whether its their VCR or their personal homepage, but that doesn’t make everyone a Programmer (with a capital P).
