if you drive north on nc-86…
…aka airport road in chapel hill, you’ll drive through historic hillsborough (orange county’s county seat) and a place called yanceyville, before you cross the state line and intersect with us-29 in danville, virginia.
us-29 is a beautiful stretch of road. jane and i chose it to avoid the soul-crushing I-85/I-95 route. as you head north you’ll pass towns like altavista and lynchburg and eventually charlottesville, where there are a few places to eat lunch or dinner. and a university with a lawn.
we went to a different kind of wedding this weekend, for a friend of jane’s, someone who was in the peace corps the same years as she (but in different countries). the ceremony and reception were in baltimore in a quaint suburban arboretum. the wedding was au casual. some ribbon, some flowers. some family, some friends. bottled water in case it got hot (it didn’t). a chuppah. the groom’s brother officiating, having been ordained by the universal life church. polaroids taken of all the guests. reception afterwards at a homey mediterranean restaurant within walking distance where we consumed beer and hummus and lentils and falafel.
excellent story. sounds like a great wedding. sorry i missed the tip to take 29. perhaps next time.
