This is an example of high schools feeling as though there is no spirit in their laws, as opposed to the letter, because any chink in a law encourages rampant abuse by crafty teenagers. It’s hugely unfair for people like this poor girl, and it happens so much because administrators don’t have the time or the energy to deal with each new challenge to each rule they make. Therefore, more options get shut out. (You should read our dress code for prom: each new stipulation added as the kids found another new way to bust through a loophole.)
