Didn’t this all just happen 8 years ago?

I feel compelled to write something about the economic climate. Except that the stories reported in the news tend to be so abstract, so global, that they’re almost meaningless. I want to bring things closer to home. The funny thing is that things closer to home seem pretty ok. Almost serene.

Here are some things that I know. I have a job. Not that this was ever in question. It was funny to hear that FM is not planning on having any layoffs. Yay! Wait…had there been rumors? Or perhaps just fallout from AdBrite, Yahoo, CurrentTV, Six Apart, Wired, Gawker, et al.

Now will that hold true come January 1st or even April 1st? I don’t know. I hope so. Everyone feels we are well-positioned to weather the downturn maelstrom. Does that mean it’s business as usual? Not exactly. A lot of changes are in play. Of course there’s the normal cost-cutting measures, the removal of open job positions. And of course the normal calls to work hard, to strengthen relationships with our partners. This is all pretty obvious stuff, nothing that’s really unique to FM.

But within the engineering team there’s been a lot of focus on what can we do better, differently, more efficiently. I think in the next six months (or less) the work that I do on a daily basis will look a lot different than it has been over the last two and a half years. There’s a lot of transition on the horizon as we focus on growth, scale, and efficiency. All this is normal for a growing company. But somehow change like this is always surprising.
