Free the markets

I’ve been enjoying retelling the drama of yesterday’s news to Stephanie (I stay up later reading, she wakes up earlier), and as much as I think that’d be a neat concept for a blog (or maybe a series of posts), it probably comes out better in real life. Who knows, maybe I’ll give it a shot. I do love dropping bombs like, “Oh, by the way, Iceland’s economy collapsed.” I mean what does that mean? It’s so abstract.

Whether you’re for or against the US bank rescue, I found this excerpt on Boing Boing amusing:

In essence, money is taken from the poor (via taxes, printing, and weakening of the dollar) and given to the wealthy so the wealthy supposedly will have enough money to lend back (at interest) to those who have just been robbed.

I just love that our darling president was allowed to say this:

“These measures are not intended to take over the free market, but to preserve it”

Is that free as in…beer?

I’m pretty damn overwhelmed by the news of all this now. Not the facts of the story but the way media is telling it. IMHO its shock and awe journalism that has contributed to the panic.

Right now I’m reading Naomi Klien’s book “The Shock Doctrine”. Its riveting! Besides being very timely it has help me put the historical puzzle peices together. I’ve read so much about the effects of disaster capitalism but didn’t quite know who the actors where and how they related to each other.
